Tips to help you prepare

Moving home can be one of the most stressful things you will do. So hopefully our pointers below will help you get things in order ready for your removal. Where possible, we will provide links for services that can help. Although we are not responsible for the content of external links.

  • Book a removal company (Fill out our form or call us!)
    • Check their insurance details (click here to see ours!)
    • Check for reviews online
    • Ask friends for recommendations
    • Scrutinise any quotes you get to ensure you will get the service you need
  • Once you have a solid date confirmed
    • Redirect your mail through Royal Mail
    • Contact your local and new council to advise of your move https://www.gov.uk/find-local-council
    • Contact your broadband / phone provider
    • Inform schools of your move date if necessary
    • Your GP, dentist and optician will need to know your new address.
    • Get quotes for or update insurance for vehicles and your buildings / contents.
    • Utilities providers for your gas, electricity and water will need to be updated with your move date.
  • Commence packing!
    • Start in the rooms you use the least
    • Declutter as you go
    • Heavier items like books and cds or dvds go into smaller boxes
    • Lighter items such as bed linen, clothes and towels can go into larger boxes.
    • Leave out some linen or scatter cushions to act as padding between layers of china and glass.
    • China and glass is best wrapped in soft paper or bubble wrap. Ask us if you need some packing materials.
    • Plates, bowls and crockery are best stacked on their side. With some paper around / between them.
    • Wine glasses are best standing upside down in a box. Wrapped and with paper / bubble and linen between the layers.
    • When packing a fragile box, use a soft layer on the bottom, then your fragile items, then another soft layer.
    • Always fill the boxes. Half full boxes will compact or crush when stacked in the vehicle.
    • Pictures are best stood up. If you lay them flat the glass can crack. If they will fit into a box it is the safest place for them. If not we will wrap them in protective blankets.
    • Chests of drawers can usually be left full. If they just contain clothes and linen.
    • if you are moving locally, there is no need to defrost your freezer. We normally load this last and it will be one the the first items unloaded. We won’t open the door and it can be plugged in soon after you arrive at the new property.
  • On moving day
    • Any pets are best in their carrier / transport box or in a room the removal team will not need to go into. Cats are quite often ok in a bathroom with some food and a litter tray.
    • Younger children will need something to keep them busy. The removal team will be in and out all day with large items of furniture. Best to keep the little ones safe.
    • Last minute items need to be packed. Any bedding used overnight. Bathroom items such as toiletries and toothbrushes.
    • Leave some refreshments out. The kettle is best left until the last minute. Your removal team will appreciate a drink when they need to have a break.
    • If you have items to be dismantled, it is best to get on to dismantling at your earliest opportunity. If you need the removal team to clear some space first let them know early in the day.
    • Leave one box aside, and clearly labelled for any screws, bolts, tv remotes etc that you don’t want to lose. We call this a “Bits box”.
    • Take meter readings. And let your suppliers know your final readings.
    • Double check that your internet and telephone will be cut off once you leave.
  • Most importantly..
    • Say goodbye to any neighbours you need to.
    • Take any pictures you would like of your old property! (We appreciate pictures of us working too!)
    • Enjoy the day.. Let the removal team take the strain.. and wish for the best in your new property!

GOOD LUCK!!

We hope our tips helped you!
